OUR PROJECTS
1. WHERE WE WORK
CAMERA is an expanding network, progressively extending its reach across LMICs. Highlighted on the map are the African countries where our initiatives have been actively implemented to date.
In 2020, CAMERA’s Needs Assessment Survey across Sub-Saharan Africa revealed severe MRI access issues, with fewer than one MRI scanner per million people and many outdated machines. The survey identified gaps in training and infrastructure and proposed the development of educational programs and collaborative networks to address these issues. Read more here
3. ADVOCACY
We actively raise awareness on the role of MRI in managing Africa's unique healthcare needs through webinars and symposia. Join our events to advocate with us as we push towards democratization of MRI.
We also share the experiences of African imaging researchers working in Africa through the Spotlight Podcast. Spotlight features conversations that take you inside their personal stories to learn how medical imaging innovations in Africa are transforming healthcare and lives of people in Africa.
4. TRAINING & MENTORSHIP
We are developing a network of emerging imaging experts through a series of specialized training initiatives (SPARK and SWiM). To learn more about these programs and their impact, visit our SPARK and SWiM project pages.

The Own Your Future Mentorship (OYFM) Program is designed to equip young African imaging professionals with the tools to accelerate their professional development through career development, education and training, active engagement, and networking opportunities. OYFM facilitates monthly meetings between experienced imaging professionals from around the globe and young professionals in Africa.

5. APERTURE ONLINE MRI RESOURCES (Coming soon in 2024)

6. OTHER PROJECTS
AFRICAN NEUROIMAGING ARCHIVE (AfNiA)
We are creating publicly available annotated MRI datasets curated from imaging centers across Africa for robust applications of machine learning. This will provide the much-needed support to move towards equitable access to high-value MRI across Africa. Visit the Medical Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (MAI Lab) to learn more.

COMPREHENSIVE ACCESSIBILITY INDEX (CAI) FOR MRI ACCESS

We are developing a novel comprehensive accessibility index (CAI) to better characterize imaging needs, going beyond the conventional scanner density (MRI per million people (pmp)) metric. CAI will enable us to better estimate access to high-value MRI services in Africa. We are applying a geographical information system (GIS) mapping approach to our CAMERA NAS data using the information from Nigeria to model CAI.
